Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial "Of mail regulation and monopoly" (April 29). The Government's proposal to give Indiapost the exclusive right to carry letters weighing up to 300 grams is ill-conceived. The postal department is hardly equipped to handle even the present bulk of mail due to shortage of personnel. To curb courier services in such circumstances would be disastrous.
O.P. Agrawal,
The Government has opened up several industries, including insurance and telecom. Its protectionist policy vis-à-vis the Department of Posts runs counter to reforms. Just as the LIC and the BSNL are responding to the competitive scenario, Indiapost too should prune itself and emerge victorious in the competition with the courier services.
V. Sambasivan,
The short-sighted bill is no solution to the decreasing market share of Indiapost, as rightly observed in the editorial. It should make efforts to improve delivery to score over courier services.
Senior citizens and the disabled benefit immensely from courier companies, which collect mail from their doorstep. Governments, which claim to be welfare-oriented, have never hesitated to introduce anti-aged, anti-poor, and anti-disabled measures. The proposed amendment is another step in the direction.
