Holiday declared on May 8

CHENNAI: All Central government offices, including industrial establishments, in Tamil Nadu will remain closed on the polling day on May 8. The Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions has issued instructions that the offices would remain closed in areas where elections to State Assemblies are scheduled to be held. Special casual leave will be granted on the polling day to an employee who is a resident of a constituency and registered as a voter but employed in a central government organisation located outside his constituency, says an official release. — Special Correspondent

Karunanidhi writes to Tandon

CHENNAI: The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, on Tuesday urged the Chief Election Commissioner, B.B. Tandon, to provide pandals and shamianas outside the polling booths on the election day in view of the "unprecedented heat wave" in Tamil Nadu.

In a letter to the CEC, he said such protection would be of immense help to voters, particularly the aged. Quoting weather reports, he said the heat wave was bound to increase each day as May was the hottest month of the season in the State. Temporary shelters could be provided wherever necessary to help the voters in the queue at the polling booths, he added. — Special Correspondent

Normal train services restored

CHENNAI: Normal train services were restored in the Chennai Central-Katpadi section on Tuesday morning on both the up and down lines after 20 hours' of disruption.

Train services on the section were affected on Sunday night due to derailment of a goods train at Chiteri near Arakkonam, about 60 km from here. While one line was restored for traffic in the early hours of Monday, the other line was opened for traffic at 5 am on Tuesday.

Trains running on the section were delayed for more than eight hours and eight pairs of express trains were cancelled following the derailment. — Special Correspondent

Attempt to smuggle heroin, one held

CHENNAI: Officers of the Narcotics Control Bureau have arrested a person at the international airport here for allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin to Maldives.

The bureau's south zonal Director, Shankar Jiwal, said based on specific information, the officers intercepted Syed Ibrahim, an Indian national who was holding a Maldives work permit, at the airport when he was about to leave for Maldives via Colombo by Sri Lankan Airlines. — Special Correspondent

Special supplementary examinations

CHENNAI: The Directorate of Government Examinations has invited applications from S.S.L.C/O.S.L.C private candidates who have not applied for the March 2006 examinations but who wish to appear for the June/July special supplementary examinations.

Application forms will be available from Wednesday at the department's offices at Chennai, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Vellore and Cuddalore, a press release here said. The last date for submission of forms is May 15. Candidates from Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur should pay the examination fee of Rs. 125 (up to three papers) through a demand draft payable at Chennai, drawn in favour of the Director of Government Examinations from any nationalised bank. Candidates from other districts, Pondicherry and Karaikkal should pay the fee through government treasury branches and submit the receipt along with the application forms.— Special Correspondent

Woman murdered

TIRUNELVELI: The Melapalayam police are looking for a goldsmith, who murdered his wife.

Police said Arumugam of Mela Naththam under Melapalayam police station limits suspected that his wife, Esakkiyammal, 33, mother of two children, had developed an extra-marital affair. When Arumugam had a quarrel with his wife on Tuesday afternoon, he attacked Esakkiyammal with a club. She was killed on the spot.

Melapalayam police have filed a case.

Youths arrested

TIRUNELVELI: The Perumalpuram police have arrested two youths in the possession of deadly weapons.

Police said Arun, 34, of NGO Colony and Venkatesh, 24, of Perumalpuram were picked up by a night patrolling team on Monday night. When the law-enforcers frisked them, they recovered two sickles from them.

The duo were arrested and remanded to judicial custody. — Staff Reporter

Policeman injured

Tuticorin: Muthukumar, a head constable attached to Authoor police station, was injured when a State Transport Corporation bus hit the motorcycle he was riding near Authoor on Monday.

The police said the bus was plying on Authoor-Punnakayal road.

The head constable sustained injuries on his leg and was admitted to Tiruchendur Government Hospital. The police arrested bus driver A. Gnanaraj, 52, for rash and negligent driving.

Man arrested

Tuticorin: The police on Tuesday arrested S. Sekhar, 26, who had stolen bicycles from various parts of Kazhugamalai recently.

He had stolen the bicycle of S. Kandasamy, 39, at Keezha Bazaar on April 23, and that of A. Govindaraj, 53, at Kazhugamalai later in the day. The stolen cycles were recovered. — Staff Reporter

Fish workers observe fast

NAGAPATTINAM : Nearly 500 fish workers belonging to Vangakadal Meen Thozhilalar Sangam (a trade union of fish workers) from 51 coastal villages in this district, observed a fast near the bus stand here on Monday.

They demanded distribution of tsunami relief, legalizing women fish vendors as workers, white paper on utilisation of tsunami fund and provision of good quality permanent houses for tsunami victims.

Kuppurethinam and N.Saraswathi, president and general secretary respectively of the sangam addressed the fasting members.

House burgled

TIRUCHI: Unknown persons gained entry into a house at Omshakthi Nagar near Tollgate No. 1 here and allegedly stole gold jewellery and cash kept inside recently when the inmates were away.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 111.99 feet on Tuesday.

The inflow was 1,905 cusecs, and the outflow 2,009 cusecs.

AIADMK member's house ransacked

ERODE: A few DMK workers had allegedly ransacked the house of an AIADMK worker here on Monday. According to the police, Selvaraj, residing in Kandasamy Thottam, preferred a complaint with the Karungalpalayam police that a few DMK members - aware that he was an AIADMK member - came to his house for canvassing. A quarrel that followed ended in DMK members ransacking Selvaraj's house.

Dies of burns

ERODE: The husband of a woman who committed suicide on Sunday, died on Monday night. Marimuthu of Chidambaram Colony here sustained severe burns trying to save his wife Kausalya (45), who immolated herself due to family dispute. Their son Sasikumar, who tried to save her too, sustained burns, and is undergoing treatment.

Commits suicide

SALEM: A mother of two children allegedly committed suicide at Danishpet near here recently. According to the police, Kavitha (24), wife of Kumar, was found hanging in the house. Mettur Revenue Divisional Officer conducted an inquiry into the death.
