Bangalore: The Karnataka Government has approved a proposal of the Bangalore Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (BMRDA) to form five satellite towns and link them with a ring road and an intermediate ring road. The implementation of the project is expected to commence shortly, irrespective of the fact that the Government is yet to select the private sector participant, which could be a foreign company with a local business associate or an Indian subsidiary. The satellite towns to be developed include Sathanur in Kanakapura taluk; Nandagudi in Hoskote taluk; Bidadi in Ramanagaram taluk; Kasaba in Ramanagaram taluk and Solur in Magadi taluk. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and BMRDA Commissioner Sudhir Krishna told presspersons here on Tuesday that the townships and the roads would be a Centre-State project with private sector participation. Under a tentative understanding worked out in consultation with the Union Minister for Surface Transport T.R. Baalu, the State Government and the Centre will bear 25 per cent of the costs each and the private sector participant the remaining 50 per cent. Acquisition of land including that required for the two ring roads, estimated at around 75,000 acres, will start in two months soon after completion of survey work. The estimated cost of the satellite towns ring road and the intermediate ring road is Rs. 2,650 crore. A length of 262 km of radial roads linking the two ring roads will be developed at a cost of Rs. 780 crore. Mr. Kumaraswamy exuded confidence that the project would go a long way in decongesting Bangalore. The demand for industrial land around Bangalore, particularly that from information technology units, would substantially come down since the new towns would be well connected by four-lane and six-lane roads. Going by BMRDA's tentative schedule, the project will be completed in about three years. The roads will be designed so as to enable vehicles to travel at 180 km an hour. The satellite towns ring road will be a stretch of 283 km, connecting the peripheral towns of Dobbspet; Magadi; Ramanagaram; Kanakapura; Anekal; Attibele; Sarjapura; Hoskote; Devanahalli; and Doddaballapur. The intermediate ring road, which will extend up to 178 km, will connect the intermediate towns of Nelamangala; Tavarekere; Bidadi; Harohalli; Thattekere; Sarjapura; Hoskote; Mallapura; and Aradeshanahalli. Both these roads would be away from the peripheral ring road to be laid by Bangalore Development Authority. Grade separators and interchanges will be constructed at the junction of the ring roads with national highways, State highways and major district roads.
