Special Correspondent

Coimbatore: As a special gesture for the substantial Malayali population in Coimbatore District, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M.Karunaidhi, has promised district-level holiday for Onam if voted to power in the ensuing Assembly elections.

Addressing an election meeting here on Monday, he pointed out that more than five lakh people from Kerala were living in Coimbatore and there was a representation for declaring public holiday for Onam festival.

If DMK were to form the Government, district-level holiday would be declared for the festival. Besides, responding to the complaint that the Backward Class certificate granted to the Ezhava and Thiyya communities had been stopped by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government, he promised that the practice of granting BC certificate to them would resume if his party were to be voted to power.
