HYDERABAD: Effigies of Taliban were burnt in all Assembly constituencies in the city under the aegis of the city unit of the BJP on Tuesday to protest against the brutal killing of telecom engineer Suryanarayana. City BJP president Venkataramani, who participated in the protest programme near Narayanaguda flyover in Himayatnagar constituency, deplored the killing of Indian nationals who were working for the prosperity of Afghanistan. All countries should condemn such dastardly acts and recognise the necessity to root out terrorism. City BJP vice-president and corporator B. Venkata Reddy also took part. Some 200 activists participated in the protest programme.
BJP leader's appeal
Special Correspondent writes: Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister B. Dattatreya has urged the Centre to deploy paramilitary forces in Afghanistan to protect Indians working in that country. In a letter to Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahmed, a copy of which was released to the press, Mr. Dattatreya wanted the Government to provide insurance cover to employees working in Afghanistan, as they had gone there to fulfil India's commitment to rebuild that country. Stating that the killing of Suryanarayana clearly exhibited the medieval barbarism of Taliban, he suggested to the Government to forthwith declare it as a terrorist outfit. He sought a financial assistance of Rs. 20 lakhs to the kin of the slain telecom engineer.
