`Temping' is the new job market mantra

Bangalore alone has nearly 7,000 temporary staffers in various organisations


  • Temporary staffing comes in handy for companies during seasonal peak periods when the workload is heavy
  • If they perform well, the employees stand a good chance of gettign a permanent job

    Bangalore: Suresh (28) has gone through five jobs in two years and earns close to Rs. 25,000 a month at his latest office. Faizia is into her third job within 18 months and takes home a cool Rs. 20,000.

    People like them are not the usual job-hoppers who contributing to the attrition rate that keeps many human resources managers awake in the night. They are part of the "temporary staffing" phenomenon, which is creating jobs as well as making things easier for companies during seasonal peak periods when the regular staff cannot cope with heavy workload. The good thing is, many a temporary employee whose work is good stands a good chance of gettina a permanent job.

    Today, "temping," as head-hunters call it, is growing faster than the regular employment market and industry predictions are that it will keep growing. Bangalore alone has close to 7,000 temporary staffers in various organisations.

    According to executives of Team Lease, which helps major corporates get temporary staff, the company has around 40,000 "temps" registered with them from across the country. Detailed profiles of qualification and experience are stored in a database and matched against job requirements as the need arises.

    Team Lease also sees to it that temporary staffers, during their contract period, enjoy all the benefits of a regular employee, including insurance.

    For the employers, it becomes easier to find additional hands for completing a major project that ay last for only six months or so. The person with the right job skills and sector-relevant experience is just a phone call away. Some temporary jobs last nine months to one year. Soon after, another job may be waiting too.

    Most temporary jobs in Bangalore are in the "white collar" category with banking, insurance, financial services, telecom and FMCG organisations offering most of the opportunities. There are also Information Technology and Information Technology-enabled Services companies that need non- technical staff for marketing and administrative positions, and in some instances, for tech jobs for shorter periods.

    Companies such as Team Lease also anticipate industry requirements and realise the need to upgrade technical skills. Many who have registered with them are put through the training required. This ensures they are ready for the job scene.

    Temporary jobs are sometimes available with government agencies too and official employment exchanges are usually happy to share their database with agencies such as Team Lease. Only with regard to industrial workers, temporary jobs become difficult, as most of them are members of inions. But, industries do hire temps for office-related work.
