State may lose over 7,000 engineering seats

R. Ravikanth Reddy

65 colleges face action if they fail to stick to AICTE norms

  • Seats in prominent colleges such as Vasavi reduced drastically
  • Eight colleges have been placed under no-admission category
  • Warning letters to institutions on appointment of faculty to be sent by August-end

HYDERABAD: The State is likely to lose 7,235 engineering seats in 65 colleges this year if colleges fail to comply with the rules of the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and these include seats in prominent colleges. Similarly, eight colleges have been placed under the no-admission category.

According to the information posted on the AICTE, seats in prominent colleges like Vasavi College of Engineering, KITS Huzurabad, G. Narayanamma Institute of Technology & Science, Deccan College of Engineering, Bharat Institute of Engineering & Technology have been reduced drastically. In the case of Vasavi College of Engineering, it has been mentioned as: conditional approval excess admissions.

    Kept in abeyance

Another 1,447 seats in four colleges have been kept in abeyance for want of compliance reports from the colleges. There is an increase of 1,140 seats in 15 other colleges.

Eight colleges that have been placed under the no-admission category are Chadalavada Ramanamma Engineering College in Tirupati, Dr. VRK College of Engineering & Technology at Jagityal in Karimnagar, Kuppam Engineering College at Kuppam, Mona College of Engineering & Technology at Nalgonda, Moula Ali College of Engineering & Technology at Penukonda, Sai Spurthi Institute of Technology at Sattupalli, Teegala Krishna Reddy Engineering College at Meerpet and Vivekananda Institute of Technology & Science at Godavarikhani.

The reduction is based on the present student-faculty ratio and the built-up area required for the college.

The AICTE rules say that approvals are given if minimum of 75 per cent of required faculty is available excluding cadre ratio.

If the shortfall is less than 25 per cent and up to 50 per cent the intake will be reduced by 25 per cent and if the shortfall is more than 50 per cent then the institute is to be placed under no-admission category.

If a new course is sanctioned last year (2005-06) at least a faculty member in the said specialisation should be available. Faculty for a particular course would be calculated on the basis of the total sanctioned strength of second, third and fourth year divided by 15 as the first year faculty is common for Engineering & Technology.

    Common faculty

However, the institutions will be required to have common faculty for teaching the syllabus of the first year in the ratio of 1:15. The institutions will be issued a warning letter regarding appointment of faculty in proper cadre ratio i.e. 1:2:6 before August 31, 2006.

Another criterion taken into consideration is the built-up area of the institutions. The requirement of built-up area per student is 11.7 sq.mtrs.

The institutions having 100 per cent built-up area or with a shortfall up to 10 per cent only on the basis of sanctioned intake are granted extension of approval. If the shortfall is more than 10 per cent and up to 25 per cent, the intake is reduced by 25 per cent.

If the shortfall is more than 25 and up to 50 per cent the intake is reduced by 50 per cent.

If the shortfall is more than 50 per cent the institute is placed under the no-admission category.
