Bail plea rejected

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday rejected a bail petition by an assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) allegedly involved in the multi-crore fake stamp paper racket.

Wazir Ahmed Khan had moved the court for bail, saying that he had been in jail for the last three years.

C.V. Nagesh, appearing for Khan, said a senior police official, Wali Basha, allegedly involved in the racket, was granted bail by the High Court. Besides, the Supreme Court had granted bail to Sangram Singh, another senior police official. He said Khan was a junior police official.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) contended that Khan had accepted a bribe of Rs. 25,000 from Abdul Kareem Telgi. Besides, he had conducted a "mahazar" in the police station and not at the spot where some articles used in printing the fake notes had been recovered.

It said Khan's release on bail would affect investigations.

Accepting the CBI's arguments, Justice V. Jagannathan rejected the bail application.
