Nihal Kapoor stuns Parul

BANGALORE: Nihal Kapoor of Tamil Nadu stunned the top seed, Parul Verma Chandigarh 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in the opening round of the boys' under-16 singles in the Sadhashivanagar Club AITA Super Series (under-14 and under-16) tennis championship here on Tuesday.

In the girls' under-14 singles, Bhavana Suresh beat her second seeded Andhra Pradesh teammate, M. Divija 7-5,6-4.

The other seeded players, however, had a smooth passage. The winners in the under-14 section included Sharon Paul of Tamil Nadu, Rachan Gowda and Sharmada Balu of Karnataka, Kyra Shroff of Maharashtra and Nova Patel of Gujarat.

In the under-16 boys singles, Sudanva Sitaram of Tamil Nadu made a short work of G.S. Prithvi, also of Tamil Nadu at 6-2, 6-1 while Gugan Verma of Tamil Nadu and A.N. Mudappa of Karnataka rallied to win their ties after dropping the first set. Gugan beat Sagar Ahuja of Maharashtra 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 and Mduappa beat B.Sunil 4-6,6-4,6-4.

Fancied players including R. Ram Kumar and Mohit Mayur of Tamil Nadu, Chetan and Chetan Pandit of Andhra entered the second round of the boys' under-14 singles. — Special Correspondent
