Kidnapped boy rescued

NEW DELHI: A six-year-old boy who was kidnapped from his house at Khajuri Khas in North-East Delhi on Saturday has been rescued at Badayun in Uttar Pradesh. A carpenter who was working at the victim's house has been arrested in this connection.

The police received a complaint from Dinesh Sahni, a resident of Sonia Vihar, alleging that his son Arvin had gone missing on Saturday. The next day, he received a call in which the kidnapper demanded Rs. 2 lakhs for Arvin's release.

The police registered a kidnapping case and traced the extortion call to a public telephone booth at Badayun. In the meantime, they learnt that Jamil Ahmed, a carpenter working at Dinesh's house, had also gone missing. Suspecting his involvement, a police team mounted raids at Badayun and arrested him after Arvin was found in his custody.

Two held for wire theft

NEW DELHI: Two men have been arrested on Tuesday by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police at Gokalpuri here for allegedly stealing a container carrying copper cables from the Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Tughlakabad in South Delhi. Cables worth Rs. 80 lakhs were allegedly recovered from them.

Acting on a tip-off that a criminal named Mohammad Irfan and one of his accomplices would come near Satyam Cinema in a stolen container truck on Monday, the police laid a trap at Gokalpuri. The police team intercepted the vehicle and overpowered the suspects. During interrogation, they identified themselves as Yogender Singh and Irfan. They allegedly disclosed that Yogender, the driver of that truck, had stolen it from ICD Tughlakabad after it was loaded with 20 tons of copper cable. Thereafter, he drove the vehicle to Gokalpuri and offloaded the cable in a godown belonging to Irfan.

Fire in slum cluster

NEW DELHI: Over 100 jhuggis were gutted in a fire at Mayur Vihar in East Delhi on Tuesday. No one was reported injured. According to the police, the fire broke out around 5-30 p.m. About a dozen fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the blaze. Scores of people were rendered homeless. The police have initiated a probe to establish the cause of fire.

Several cases of fire have been reported from slum clusters in the past few days, especially after the civic body initiated a demolition drive against illegal settlements.

Held for bootlegging

NEW DELHI: Two alleged bootleggers were arrested at Patel Nagar in West Delhi in the early hours of Tuesday. The police claim to have recovered 9,600 quarters of illicit liquor from their Tata-407. Acting on a tip-off that a vehicle loaded with a consignment of illicit liquor would come from Haryana towards Patel Nagar, the police laid a trap and intercepted the vehicle near Shadipur flyover and arrested the accused. They were identified as Shohrat Ali and Ramphal.

Five `robbers' arrested

NEW DELHI: Five alleged robbers have been arrested at Sultanpuri in North-West Delhi on charges of planning to commit robbery. The police recovered a country-made firearm and two live cartridges were their possession. The accused have been identified as Mahesh, Raj Kumar, Sachin, Sanjay and Ajay, all residents of Sultanpuri. The police said Mahesh and Raj Kumar were earlier involved in an attempt-to-murder case, in which they shot at and injured a public telephone booth owner, Niranjan Singh, in a bid to rob him of his earnings on April 18.
