Man burnt alive in fresh violence in Vadodara

Manas Dasgupta

AHMEDABAD: One person was reportedly burnt alive in his car as fresh incidents of violence broke out in the curfew-bound Vadodara late on Tuesday night.

The police first tried to dismiss the incident as a case of accident, but admitted that a mob stopped the car on Ajwa road under the curfew-bound Panigate police station area and set the vehicle on fire.

The mob took advantage of the power failure in the area to indulge in violence.

The police reached the spot after the incident and removed the body to the Government SSG Hospital for post-mortem.

The local residents said they saw a mob grouping in the area and sought police assistance but no help was forthcoming. They complained that the police control room refused to send reinforcements, saying that there were not enough men available to patrol all the affected areas.

After a daylong of comparative peace in the city, incidents of stone-throwing and arson were also reported from Fatehpura, Yakutpura and other neighbouring areas under the curfew-bound City Police Station.

With the burning incident, the death toll in the violence that followed the demolition of a dargah has gone up to six.
