MYSORE: It is an annual event eagerly awaited for its cultural events irrespective of one's religious belief the jayanti celebrations of social reformer and saint Basaveshwara organised at Kalamandira by the Department of Kannada and Culture, the district administration and other organisations. It used to be a purely religious affair confined to discourses and discussions on the teachings of Basaveshwara. But in recent years, the organisers have widened the ambit of the celebrations to elicit greater participation from different sections.
Seminar held
A seminar on the status of women and fancy dress competition for children were part of the celebrations this time around. The inaugural day was marked by a procession in which cultural and folk troupes from Mysore region participated. The fancy dress competition, "Sharanara Vesha," drew a good response. As many as 23 out of the nearly 60 children participating in the "Chinnara Sangama" participated in it. Children in the age group of 5-14 staged plays depicting the events revolving Basaveshwara's life. It was the "Sharanara Vesha" held on Tuesday that turned out to be a major draw. The characters portrayed included Akka Mahadevi, Basaveshwara, Ardha Narishwara, and others associated with Basaveshwara. The children also presented a group song and a Bharatnatyam programme.
