  • Survey nearing completion on Wayanad Road on the 7-km stretch from Mananchira to Vellimadukunnu
  • Project falls under the City Improvement Scheme envisaged through Central funding for the cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Kochi

KOZHIKODE: The survey for widening of road stretches in the city as part of the City Improvement Scheme is in the process of being carried out.

The road-widening proposal, mooted some years ago, envisages improvement of 60 km of different road stretches in the city.

Road widening has been proposed for some of roads in the city, including the Wayanad Road, and the stretches on the mini bypass from Meenchanda to West Hill.

The proposal had also included widening of the road parallel to the beach from Meenchanda to Bhat Road junction.

Sources at the Public Works Department (PWD), Roads Division said that the survey for the widening of the roads was in the process of being completed by the Investigation Planning wing of the Roads Division.

Survey is in the process of being completed on the Wayanad Road on the seven-kilometre stretch from the Mananchira to Vellimadukunnu. Moideen Koya, Executive Engineer, PWD, Roads Division, said the scheme was only in the initial stages of implementation, and the details needed to be worked out.

For instance, as per Calicut Development Authority specifications, the width of the road envisaged under the improvement scheme was ideally 30 metres. Details of this, including funding for the project, are awaited.

The widening programme falls under the City Improvement Scheme envisaged through Central funding for the cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Kochi.

The road widening process is already under way in Thiruvananthapuram, and would start soon in Kochi too, the executive engineer said.

The unprecedented increase in the traffic flow in the city highlights the primacy of the road improvement plan, sources added.
