KHAMMAM: The delay in implementation of Dummugudem project came in for sharp criticism at the district review committee meeting here on Tuesday. Ruling party members including Zilla Parishad Chairman Chanda Lingaiah found themselves in a fix as members of the Left parties wanted a categorical assurance from the Government on the works of the lift scheme aimed at extending irrigation facilities to over 4 lakh acres in the district.
`No importance'
CPI (M) leader and Khammam MLA Thammineni Veerabhadram pointed out that the Government, which went ahead with the works on Polavaram project much before obtaining clearance from the various agencies concerned, failed to give due importance to Dummugudem lift scheme. There was little progress even after laying the foundation stone for the scheme. He stressed the need for adopting a resolution requesting the Government to hasten the process for implementing the scheme. Mr. Lingaiah said the Government was firm on implementing the project at any cost and there was no need for reminding it in any manner. Intervening in the discussion, Collector Rajendra Narendra Nimje said the tender process was in progress and the works would be taken up once it was finalised. Mr. Veerabhadram, however, wanted a resolution to be adopted in the project issue in view of the importance of the project for the district and the members endorsed his view.
Model colonies
Burgumpadu MLA Payam Venkateswarlu pointed out that model colonies were being constructed in places facing the risk of submergence in his constituency. The Collector, however, made it clear that the selection of places for model colonies would be left to technical experts. Necessary precautions would be taken while sanctioning the colonies. The selection of Indiramma villages should be done by laying down certain norms, Mr. Veerabhadram said . He observed that powers were vested with the district in-charge Minister as far as this issue was concerned. Joint Collector Arokia Raj also took part.
