HASSAN: Work on the training academy of the Karnataka State Transport Corporation (KSRTC) on the outskirts of Hassan city will commence shortly, the Divisional Controller, KSRTC, Hassan division, Ganganna Gowda, has said. He told The Hindu that it was planned to start the training programme for drivers and conductors of the corporation by 2007, he said. The decision of the corporation to set up a training academy on the lines of Pune's Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), at Satyamangala Layout was opposed by the residents of Udayagiri, Satyamangala, Kuvempu Nagara and Indra Nagara extensions. They were urging the KSRTC to set up the academy near Sankenahalli, which was away from residential areas, as construction of a wall for the academy would cut off residential extensions from Dairy Circle, which connected them to the city. When KSRTC started constructing the compound wall despite opposition from residents, members of Udayagiri Hitarakshana Samithi lodged their protest by pulling down the wall. The residents stopped their agitation, after they were assured by KSRTC authorities that the two roads connecting Udayagiri and Dairy Circle would not be closed, till an alternative arrangement was made.
