NEW DELHI: Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to call a meeting of the Chief Ministers of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Uttaranchal for solving the Capital's drinking water problem. Stating that as against a requirement of 900 million gallons of water per day (MGD) Delhi had been getting 675 MGD, the BJP leader said the situation turned for the worse this past Sunday when, due to a fall in the level of the Yamuna, Delhi could only get 550 MGD. Dr. Vardhan said while Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had promised that there would be no shortage of power or water this summer and an action plan was stated to have been framed, the people are struggling to meet their day-to-day requirements on both fronts. Moreover, he said, the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant had still not started functioning despite tall claims and "the foreign water company is being paid Rs 12.5 lakhs per month as penalty." Charging that the plant machinery was gathering rust, Dr. Vardhan demanded to know who was responsible for the drain of Rs. 800 crores of public money.
