K.T. Chandy dead

Doyen of Indian management scene

Kottayam: K.T. Chandy, considered the doyen of the Indian management scene and who is credited with having made invaluable contributions to management development and practices, died here on Tuesday. He was 93.

A Barrister of Law from Middle Temple, he was the founder-director of the Indian Institute of Management-Kolkata, the first IIM in the country.

He was Chairman of the Food Corporation of India, Hindustan Steel Ltd, the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Technology-Chennai, the National Productivity Council, the Metallurgical Research Institute, Ranchi, the Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore, the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation, the Centre for Earth Science Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Board, Member of the University Grants Commission, Member, Asian Productivity Organization and Promoter of the Indian Society for Mathematical Research and the Kerala Forest Research Institute, Thrissur. He was also the Director of Federal Bank from 1981-89. Chandy was a recipient of many awards, including the Asian Productivity Organisation Award in 1980. His wife is Rebecca Chandy. They have three sons and two daughters. The funeral service will take place at St. Lazarus Cemetery, near Collectorate, Kottayam, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
