STPI may extend benefits to SMEs

Special Correspondent

Changes likely in STPI, SEZ policies

BANGALORE: The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) has proposed extending benefits to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the IT sector beyond 2009 similar to those granted to big firms located in the special economic zones (SEZ). As per the existing policy, the SMEs in the IT sector would have to migrate to the SEZ to avail themselves of the benefits after the concessions accorded under STPI are withdrawn in 2009. But, SMEs are reluctant to migrate to SEZs.

The Centre is expected to announce changes in the policies relating to STPI and SEZ to benefit SMEs, a top STPI official has said. STPI-Bangalore has submitted certain recommendations to the Union Ministry of Information Technology to help the SMEs, which lose out to the big ones on economies of scale, its Director B. V. Naidu told reporters here on Wednesday.

"The Government is committed to protect the interests of the SMEs that are outside the SEZ.'' M. K. Shankaralinge Gowda, Secretary, Information Technology, Karnataka, said.
