SHGs formed first in 1982-83: Chidambaram

"Jayalalithaa's claim contrary to truth"

P. Chidambaram.

CHENNAI: Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday criticised Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for her claims relating to self-help groups (SHGs) and said they were contrary to truth.

He said the SHGs were first formed in 1982-83 under the DWCRA scheme, part of the Union Government's Integrated Rural Development Programme. In May 1989, SHGs were introduced in Dharmapuri, Salem and South Arcot districts after the Tamil Nadu Government entered into an agreement with IFAD and obtained a loan of about $15 million.

With a view to implementing the scheme, the Union Government registered the Rashtriya Mahila Gosh in May 1993 and from April 1, 1999 the SHG scheme was implemented under the SGSY scheme. Ms. Jayalalithaa was not a Chief Minister in 1982-83 and in May 1989, Mr. Chidambaram pointed out in a statement.
