Police crackdown continues, Istiyaq Ahmed arrested

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Continuing the crackdown on the organised gangs, the city police have detained yet another person with criminal antecedents, Istiyaq Ahmed, under the Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum Grabbers Act, 1985, commonly known as the Goonda Act.

Commissioner of Police Ajai Kumar Singh told presspersons on Wednesday that he passed the order detaining Istiyaq Ahmed under the Act following a report submitted by Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Bijay Kumar Singh.

The Commissioner said Istiyaq Ahmed (37) of Noah Street in Shivajinagar took to crime in 1993 and was accused in 27 criminal cases until he was detained under the Goonda Act for the first time in 2000.

After his release, he continued with his unlawful activities and nine cases of murder, attempt to murder, rioting, criminal intimidation and extortion were registered against him since 2000.

He was a member of the Tanveer Ahmed gang until he formed his own gang. In 2001, Istiyaq Ahmed, even while in jail, allegedly masterminded the murder of Azam, a Shivajinagar-based cloth merchant. Istiyaq Ahmed's brother Ashwaq Ahmed and others allegedly hacked Azam to death on Arunachalam Road in Shivajinagar. Istiyaq Ahmed had allegedly attempted to murder two of his rivals Mohammed Ashraf alias Onte and Khaleel alias Tharkari Khaleel, who were Tanveer Ahmed's accomplices, the Commissioner said. Istiyaq Ahmed is the sixth person to be detained under the Goonda Act since March. The others who were detained under the Act earlier were Sanjeeva, Ayaz Chowdhari, Aslam alias Achcu, Ravi alias Chara and Shivaraj.
