This Day That Age
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. B.C. Roy, said in Calcutta on May 3 that he felt he should withdraw the proposal for the union of West Bengal and Bihar States. In a statement, he referred to the result of the recent Parliamentary by-election in the North-West Calcutta constituency and said: "Although one election like this may not be a clear indication of the will of the people on any such matter, yet we cannot ignore this verdict." Dr. Roy announced that he was informing the Government of India about the matter. Before issuing the statement the Chief Minister discussed with his Cabinet colleagues the results of the recent by-elections in Calcutta and Khejri, where the Congress candidates were defeated. After the meeting, the pressmen waiting outside were given the statement of the Chief Minister.
