This Day That Age
Laying the foundation-stone of the new office premises of the Postmaster-General, Madras Circle, on Mount Road in Madras on May 3, Mr. Jagjivan Ram, Union Minister for Communications, said there was tremendous demand for the provision of public call offices in the rural areas of the country. This indicated the growing prosperity of the villages. Mr. Jagjivan Ram appealed to the engineers of the Central Public Works Department, who had done the architectural and structural design of the entire building, to give a touch of beauty to the construction. A few curves and lines would do the job and they could employ the art and architecture of the State wherein the building was constructed, so that its appearance could be in harmony with the aesthetic sense of the people of the State. Mr. Jagjivan Ram said that it was in the fitness of things that the PMG's office in the city, which was the nerve-centre of life in South India, should be housed properly, with adequate accommodation for the efficient discharge of the duties cast on them. He congratulated the Madras Government and the Corporation for the help and cooperation given by them to the department in acquiring the building site. The building will have a total plinth area of 88,400 sq. ft. and a carpet area of 65,000 sq. ft. The total cost of the construction, including all services undertaken at present, would be Rs.15 lakhs. The function was held in a specially erected pandal on the site of the new building. A model of the new building was on display.
