Maths-physics links

Chennai: The King Faizal International prize in Science was awarded to M.S. Narasimhan on April 3 for "his seminal contributions to theories which have strengthened the links between mathematics and physics."

It consists of a gold medal and $2,00,000 (Rs. 89,70,000), which he will share with joint-winner Simon Donaldson.

The list of mathematicians who were awarded this prize in the past is a veritable who-is-who at the top level of mathematical achievement, and consists of Sir Michael Atiyah, Dennis Sullivan, Andrew Wiles, Yuri Manin and Peter Williston Shor.
