Coimbatore: The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) has appealed to the Chief Election Commissioner to consider monetary compensation to workers of the unorganised sector on May 8, to enable them to discharge their democratic duty.
Memorandum
In a memorandum to the Election Commission, the vice-president of INTUC, Tamil Nadu Unit, N. Nanjappan, had pointed out that industrial workers and Government employees would be able to turn up at the polling stations to cast their vote because of the Government's decision to give them a holiday with a day's pay on the polling day. In the case of unorganised workers, they would have to turn up for work on that day to earn their bread. Because of such a compulsion, the unorganised workers, who form 80 per cent of the total workforce, would either go without wages or would have to refrain from casting their vote.
Revenue Department
In view of such a situation, he appealed to the Election Commission to direct the State Government to pay monetary benefit of at least Rs. 75 as compensation (for the loss of wages on the polling day). The Revenue Department could provide the wages to workers who show the voting mark as a proof for having discharged their democratic duty.
Instruction to factories
Meanwhile, the Inspector of Factories, Circle II, K. Thirumurugabalakrishnan, has informed that all industrial units and establishments in Coimbatore and Palladam regions would give one day holiday for its employees with wages on the polling day (May 8).
