BANGALORE: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi has approved the Common Entrance Test (CET) Bill, passed by both Houses of the legislature.

The Bill provides for reservation in professional colleges from the coming academic year, and the Government will now frame rules under the Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Determination of Fee) Bill, 2006, Higher Education Minister D.H. Shankaramurthy said here on Thursday.

He told presspersons the draft rules would be finalised shortly. Once the rules came into effect, all colleges would have to follow the fee structure determined by the Rangavittalachar Committee, he said. The Rangavittalachar Committee, which was formed to fix the fees, and the S. Venkataraman Committee, set up to oversee admissions to professional institutions, would cease to exist, Mr. Shankaramurthy said.

He said the search committees to draw up a panel of names and select vice-chancellors for Bangalore University and Kuvempu University had short-listed names, and the final choice of candidates would be announced soon. The search committee to select Gulbarga University Vice-Chancellor was yet to meet, he said. Mr. Shankaramurthy said civil works for the new medical college in Shimoga had been completed.
