Join defence service, youth told

Pre-training camp for airmen recruitment inaugurated

SHIMOGA: Chief Executive Officer of the Shimoga Zilla Panchayat N. Shivakumar said here on Thursday that efforts should be made to prevail upon the youth to join the defence forces as the number of youth from the State joining the defence forces is low compared to other States.

Inaugurating a free pre-training camp for airmen recruitment organised by Rotary Clubs, the district administration and Kuvempu University's Bureau of Employment and Guidance, he said aspiring candidates from the State could join military service if their mistakes were identified and corrected at the preliminary training camp.

Mr. Shivakumar said the performance of candidates from the State was far from satisfactory owing to lack of training.

If this was taken care of, there was no reason why the youth from the State would not do well, he added. This would also add to the State's representation in the defence forces, Mr. Shivakumar said.

`Noble profession'

He noted that the youth gave the last priority to joining the defence service and sought to try their luck there when their efforts to land jobs elsewhere failed.

"This should not happen. They should think of a career in the defence service as it is a noble profession," he said.
