It could become another Enron, warns CPI secretary

  • Says project had been controversial since conceptual stage
  • Present Congress Government had cancelled the PPA

ANANTAPUR: The State unit of Communist Party of India (CPI) on Thursday cautioned the State Government against allowing the Hinduja's power project, as it could become another Enron and burden the people.

Talking to mediapersons here, State secretary K. Narayana stated that the project had been controversial since the conceptual stage in TDP regime. The present Congress Government had cancelled the power purchase agreement (PPA) entered into with the power project by the TDP Government as the price of power purchase was exorbitant.

He alleged that the private company had been trying to convince the Government to revive its PPA and had also been stating that it would sell power to other States if Andhra Pradesh was not interested. But the intention of the company was to deceive the Government and force the power purchase on the State with the help of PPA in future, as it had no PPA with other State, Mr. Narayana explained.

    Severe shortage

Stating the people in the State had been suffering severe shortage of power and low voltage, the CPI leader urged the Government to ensure eight-hour supply to farm sector in two spells during daytime only.

As the water available in Krishna was already allocated to different systems in the State, he suggested the State Government get Godavari water to Hyderabad for drinking needs. About 700 tmc ft assured water was still unutilised and about 2,000 to 3,000 tmc ft of Godavari water was flowing waste into the sea every year, he noted.

On NREGS, the CPI leader observed that the officials were not keen on implementing it as irregularities were not possible in the scheme. They had shown tremendous involvement in the Food For Work programme as there was scope for large-scale irregularities. He urged the Government to ensure Rs. 80 wages per day under NREGS, as the wage seekers were not even getting Rs. 40 at several places.
