Coir seminar to be held in Rajahmundry

To create awareness on prospects of coir-based wood substitutes

VISAKHAPATNAM: Manufacture and use of coir-based wood substitutes will come up for discussion at a State-level seminar being held on Sunday at Rajahmundry on `Growth prospects in the coir industry.'

The seminar under the aegis of Coir Board's regional office in the city is aimed at creating awareness among entrepreneurs on new prospects in the coir sector.

The Coir Board is working under the Ministry of Agro and Rural Industries as a facilitator with head quarters in Cochin. ``We are coordinating the activities pertaining to Coir Board from our Visakhapatnam office,'' Coir Board Regional Officer T.P. Padmanabhan, said. Rajahmundry MP V. Arun Kumar, MLA R. Surya Prakash Rao, former MP and Chairman of Coir Board A.C. Bose, are scheduled to attend the seminar. Mr. Padmanabhan saidCoir Board, in association with a firm had developed coir-based wood substitutes having varied applications in the manufacture of doors and chairs.

Coir pith

Coir pith is yet another item where there is large scope for export. The export of coir pith is increasing over the past few years. During 2005-06, the export of coir pith crossed 50,000 tonnes valued at Rs.36 crores. Coir pith is available in abundance in AP.
