Training the trainers for road safety management

Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar

NEW DELHI: Twenty-two officers from Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Sikkim recently completed a six-day training module under a "Train the Trainers'' programme organised by the Institute of Road Traffic Education for initiating Traffic Police Organisation Development Centres in different States.

IRTE president Rohit Baluja said India was passing through a crisis in the area of road safety management as there were almost 100,000 fatalities and nearly 12.75 lakh serious injuries every year in India due to road accidents that are also responsible for a social loss of around Rs. 55,000 crores a year. Delhi alone accounts for nearly 1,700 fatalities annually contributing to a annual social loss of about Rs. 1,200 crores.

Despite this situation, he said, traffic management has not been defined and therefore roles and responsibilities of traffic management agencies had also not been defined leaving the traffic police ultimately responsible for the non-functioning of other departments.

As such, the "Train the Trainers'' programme was organised to do away with the anomalies.

The event coincided with the presentation of the IRTE and Prince Michael International Road Safety Award-2005 to the Royal Oman Police of Sultanate of Oman. Its Director-General Traffic, Brigadier Majed Moosa Al Hilaly, received the award.
