AKSHARA THEATRE: Scene from a play being performed by students

NEW DELHI: For eight years now they have given the Capital's children a reason to enjoy classes even during holidays. And having won many hearts and nurtured the talent of many more, good old Akshara Theatre is back with its summer festival for the season.

Coming as it does with the promise of being both fun-filled and attractive for the students, the five-week-long workshop will be conducted by well-known artistes Gopal Sharman, Jalabala Vaidya and Anasuya Vaidya.

Beginning May 17, the Akshara Theatre's Children's Summer Festival will provide young ones the chance to spend their vacation learning new art forms. From theatre to classical music and drawing and painting to poetry and creative writing, the festival will also see classes being held on crafts, yoga, environment and dance.

Also on offer this year will be one-week-long master classes by international artistes. While a miniature painting class will be conducted by award-winning miniaturist Mange Ram Sharma, Sahitya Akademi award winner N. N. Pillai will hold writing classes. Also presented as part of the classes will be Dhrupad singing by Ustad Wasifuddin Khan Dagar and film-making by Gopal Sharman.

For those inclined towards dance, the festival will have workshop in both classical and modern forms. Also taught will be singing and chanting of the Isha Vasya Upanishad and other shlokas and mantras in chaste Sanskrit by Gopal Sharman. But that is not all. For those interested in watching movies with the right message, there will also be screening of environmental films as well as an interaction with the country's green crusaders.

Produced as part of the festival will be a play each for the junior and senior students that will be directed by Jalabala Vaidya and Anasuya Vaidya. And the participation of the kids will go beyond just acting here, as they will be involved in the making of sets and properties.

Talented students in other fields will also be allowed to showcase their art at the end of the festival.
