Showcasing the land of colours

Ira Gur-Aryeh has taken two and a half years to cook up this "biryani''. A special kind that even the best chefs in the heart of the Awadh could not rustle up, it is of the "picturesque" variety. With aroma in its colours, it is literally the taste of India with Israeli "masala".

Travelling around India, he has got photographs from the incredibly hot deserts of Rajasthan to the lazy green backwaters of Kerala. Gur-Aryeh has captured the country through his camera.

Bitten by the roving bug, he has wandered around every continent, "freezing" people and cultures in his camera. However, he feels that his intimate encounter with the most photogenic country of all -- India, the land of colours and contrasts -- has added a new dimension to his perception and work.

Not an amateur lens-man, he has studied professional photography for two years at the prestigious Musrara School of Photography and Imaging at Jerusalem in Israel. His photographs often find a place in the French language travel and business magazine "Indes'', which recently launched an English edition titled "India & You".

A different kind of "Incredible India'', his pictures might be about the vibrant colours of the country but they also capture the spirit of the tag with a sense of humour. Finding the tiny bizarre moments in the everyday life and capturing them, some of his pictures bring on a smile.

The exhibition is being held at Café Turtle, atop Full Circle Bookstore, in N-8 Greater Kailash-I Market. Inaugurated by the Israeli Ambassador to India, David Danieli, the 10-day exhibition will be open to the public from Friday.

All the proceeds from the sale of pictures will be donated to the Delhi-based non-government organisation Ritinjali which is actively involved in education and community development. -- Mandira Nayar
