New LIC Chairman

NEW DELHI: T.S. Vijayan has taken over as Chairman of the Life Insurance Corporation of India.

Mr. Vijayan joined LIC as a Direct Recruit Officer in 1977 and since then has held various positions including Marketing Manager, Senior Divisional Manager and Executive Director of Information Technology and Business Process Re-engineering, before becoming LIC Managing Director.

World youth conference

NEW DELHI: The concluding session of the 60th anniversary celebrations of World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) will be held along with the 9th Congress of Greek Communist Youth (KNE) at Athens in Greece from May 9 to 14, according to an announcement here.

The WFDY General Council Meeting in Athens will review the youth movement against contract jobs in France as well as Nepal's struggle for democracy. The KNE will organise an anti-imperialist demonstration on May 14.

Turkish Ambassador meets Mayor

NEW DELHI: The Ambassador of Turkey, Halil Akinci, called on Delhi Mayor Farhad Suri on Thursday and suggested that the Turkish capital Ankara be accorded sister city status with Delhi.

Mr. Akinci spoke of exchange of ideas in the fields of municipal taxation, public transport, private-public partnerships, solid waste management and other areas of civic interest.

Welcoming the Ambassador's suggestion, Mr. Suri said MCD would work towards according sister city status to Ankara.

New AAI official takes over

NEW DELHI: Satish C. Chhatwal has taken over as Member (Finance) at the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Prior to joining AAI, Mr. Chhatwal was working as Director (Finance) in National Aluminium Company Limited. He has also held senior positions in National Fertilizers Limited and RITES.

Annual day celebrated

NEW DELHI: The Deputy Director of Education of North-West District, K.D. Jassal, inaugurated the annual day celebrations of Lancer's Convent this past weekend.

To mark the occasion, the students presented a dance performance and staged a bilingual play.

Seven injured in fire

New Delhi: Seven people were injured in a fire that tore through a building in Chattarpur area of South Delhi on Thursday, fire department said. The blaze broke out after a gas cylinder leak and soon engulfed the whole building in Ambedkar Colony in Sant Nagar area, they said. Fire fighters rushed to the scene and rescued seven badly burned residents of the building. All of them have been admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital here.
