The desilting of tanks and lakes can help store water when it rains. People in rural constituencies such as Gummidipoondi, Tiruttani and Pallipet, say that not much attention has been given to this matter of urgent importance. So much so that the groundwater level is at 160 feet and 250 feet in Gummidipoondi and Pallipet areas respectively.
An instance of how the proper maintenance of even a temple tank pays dividends is the one at Thiruvalangadu in the Tiruttani constituency. Following last year's rain, the tank brimming with water now presents a pleasant sight.
A local resident points out that the tank became full after seven long years and that water was overflowing for a month, thanks to good maintenance and timely desilting.
