CHENNAI: Election officials have begun the final preparations for the election day. For the second on the trot on Thursday, they put up electronic voter machines for display in a few places including the Egmore railway station to educate the public on the use of the electronic voting machines. At Ripon Buildings, officials were involved in hectic parleys over the conduct of training for 12,500 election staff over the next two days. The District Elections Officer supervised the preparation of identification cards for the workers. The EVMs for the 2,425 polling stations have already been despatched to the designated centres in the city. A total of 27.33 lakh voters have been listed in the 14 Assembly constituencies that would go to poll with the rest of the State on May 8. This includes 13.72 lakh men and 13.59 lakh women voters, apart from 910 postal voters. Central Reserve Police Force personnel have already arrived in the city. The District Elections Officer and the City Police Commissioner will hold talks in the next couple of days to depute additional security for `sensitive' polling booths.
