Montek seeks larger Asian participation

Ashok Dasgupta

HYDERABAD: Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia on Thursday asked investors from the Asian region to participate in a bigger way in India's growth story that was unfolding in the infrastructure sector.

Addressing the `Advantage India' session at the Asian Development Bank's annual meeting here, Dr. Ahluwalia said: "Your investment will yield high returns as enunciated in the various model concessional agreements that have been worked out relating to various sectors."Dr. Ahluwalia also carved out a bigger role for the ADB in the development of the country's infrastructure, especially when it would step up growth and go a long way in alleviating poverty.

India, Dr. Ahluwalia pointed out, required huge investments in the infrastructure sector, which could even run to $150 billion at a modest estimate. Giving details about each sector such as ports, roads and airports, he said that through the modernisation of airports, the growth in traffic was expected to be about 15-16 per cent annually.
