New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday asked Prasar Bharati if it could pay some amount for sharing the telecast of the India-West Indies cricket matches to be played later this month. A Bench, comprising Justices Ashok Bhan and L.K. Panta, asked Solicitor-General G.E. Vahanvati to find out some workable solution as done during the India-Pakistan matches early this year. The Bench posted for hearing on May 10 the application of Ten Sports seeking to restrain Prasar Bharati from downlinking the live feed of the matches. The Dubai-based sports channel contended that if the Test and One-Day International series, to be played in West Indies, were simulcast on Doordarshan, it would suffer a huge loss. It had sold the distribution rights to Set Discovery Pvt. Ltd., which would have the telecast rights throughout the country. The rights had been acquired from British Sky Broadcasting Ltd. Prasar Bharati did not participate in the tenders. Hence, it prayed for a direction to restrain Prasar Bharati from compelling it to share the live feed.
