COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan navy and air force on Friday warded off an attack by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) off the island's north-western coast, the army said. "One LTTE boat laden with arms and ammunition" and a rebel-truck mounted with "mounted with heavy guns" were destroyed in the combined operation. "Naval troops on patrol off Kudiramalai area [to the south of Mannar] detected suspected LTTE boats mingling with fishermen". When the navy vessels approached the rebel craft for investigation, they were fired at by the LTTE boats. The navy "retaliated in self-defence causing destruction of one LTTE craft and forcing others to beach" at a nearby shore. One naval craft sustained three gunshots.
