Opposition disturbing law and order, says Narayanasamy

Special Correspondent

"Shows they are desperate, apprehensive about the outcome in the polls"

  • Opposition attacked DPA volunteers, he says
  • People enthusiastic about DPA

PONDICHERRY: All India Congress Committee General Secretary V. Narayanasamy on Friday charged the Opposition with disturbing law and order before the Pondicherry Assembly polls.

Addressing presspersons at his residence here, he said the Opposition fomented trouble and attacked volunteers of parties affiliated to the Democratic Progressive Alliance. This showed they were desperate and apprehensive about the outcome in the polls.

Mr. Narayanasamy said for the past ten days he had been campaigning for DPA candidates in Pondicherry and Karaikal along with Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) Parliamentary party leader M. Ramadoss, Secretary of the Pondicherry unit of the Communist Party of India N. Kalainathan and AICC representatives. He said people wanted to ensure the continuation of DPA rule in Pondicherry. However, Mr. Narayanasamy said that he, along with others, received representations during campaign demanding the holding of panchayat elections and houses for all tsunami affected families.

Asked for the Congress' stand on the status of JIPMER, particularly in the current context of the reported move of the Union Health Ministry to convert it into an autonomous body, he said: "We will stand by the views and expectations of the people at large."

Mr. Narayanasamy said the election manifesto released by the party would be adhered to. He said AICC president Sonia Gandhi would decide on the Chief Minister when the next government was formed by the DPA, which would win all thirty seats in the Assembly polls. However, he was non-committal when asked whether there was a unanimous decision on the Chief Ministerial candidate.
