The popular art form of the State performed after 250 years

ALAPPUZHA: After a period of more than 250 years, the popular art form of the State Thullal was performed at the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Swami temple on Friday at the initiative of Ambalappuzha temple advisory committee, the Ambalappuzha Kunchan Memorial under the State Government and the Travancore Devaswom Board.

Thullal could not be staged in the temple because of a ban imposed by a former king of Ambalappuzha some time between 1725 and 1750. The Thuall artistes, Travancore Devasowm Board president G. Raman Nair, president of the Kunchan Memorial Nedumudy Harikumar and other office-bearers and various cultural leaders entered the temple in a procession from Ambalappuzha Kunchan Memorial in the evening.

The artistes and other made obeisance at the venue inside the temple where Nambiar is believed to have performed first. Later, they performed thullal inside the `Natakasala' (drama hall) of the temple at around 5.30 p.m.

Artist Kalamandalam Prabhakaran performed Kalyanasaugandhikam Sheethankan Thullal first. That was followed by a Parayan Thullal performance by Vayalar Krishnan Kutty and an Ottan Thuallal performance by Ambalappuzha Suresh Varma.

Earlier the Kunchan Award-2006 was presented to thullal exponent Ayamkudi Thankappan Nair by Mr. Raman Nair at a function.
