Rs. 2.5 lakh was stolen from Mayor's chamber: BJP

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Bharatiya Janata Party leader in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council A.H. Basavaraju on Friday alleged that Rs. 2.5 lakh had been stolen from Mayor Mumtaz Begum's chamber two days ago.

Demanding an enquiry into the theft, Mr. Basavaraju pointed out that the Mayor had not lodged a complaint about the theft so far.

`Mayor knows it'

"She knows she will have to face an embarrassing situation if asked from where did the money come from," Mr. Basavaraju said.

"This apart, she has also suddenly appointed a new personal secretary Shankarappa. The fact that she has changed her personal secretary soon after the theft has been reported proves that the money has been stolen," he said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party members, led by Mr. Basavaraju, have planned a protest in front of the Mayor's office on Saturday demanding a probe into the issue.

Charge denied

When contacted, the Mayor vehemently denied that money had been stolen from her chamber. "When I do not know about the theft, I wonder how the Bharatiya Janata Party members got to know about it. Why will I have such a big amount in my chamber? These rumours have been created by the Bharatiya Janata Party to tarnish my image," she added.
