DDA `go-ahead' to many projects

Staff Reporter

These include bridge on Yamuna, flyovers on Outer Ring Road

NEW DELHI: Construction of an imposing signature bridge on the Yamuna, corridor improvement of Outer Ring Road from IIT Gate to National Highway 8 and six other major road projects have been cleared by the Technical Committee of the Delhi Development Authority paving the way for start of work on them.

The DDA meeting chaired by vice-chairman Dinesh Rai cleared a number of projects that had been in the planning stage for a long while now. These projects, whose construction would help ease the problems of the travelling public, include the signature bridge on the Yamuna river 600 metres downstream of the existing Wazirabad bridge. Costing around Rs. 464 crores, the project will also involve improvement and upgrading of approach roads and construction of a water sports park that would serve as an amusement centre.

The new bridge is also expected to greatly ease congestion on the existing two-lane Wazirabad bridge, a vital link between Delhi and U.P. for the last 50 years. It will be a landmark destination and is also expected to become a major tourist attraction. For making travel on the 8-km section of Outer Ring Road between IIT Gate and NH-8 signal-free, three flyovers -- with two carriageways of 9 metres width each -- have been sanctioned on Outer Ring Road following preparation of a plan by Craphts Consultant (I) Pvt. Ltd. The first flyover will come up at the Africa Avenue-Aruna Asaf Ali Road junction, the second on the Vivekanand Marg `T' intersection near Vasant Vihar and the third on Rao Tula Ram Marg `T' intersection.

Besides, to facilitate right turn movement along Outer Ring Road, three underpasses for `U' turn have been proposed along the corridor. While two are located on the stretch of Outer Ring Road in front of Rose Garden, the third is located between Sangam Marg and Vasant Vihar intersection. Under the plan, pedestrian subways have also been proposed on Outer Ring Road near the T-junctions of Jiya Sarai Village, Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, Nelson Mandela Road and Poorvi Marg.

The other projects cleared at the meeting included construction of a road under bridge (RUB) on existing Delhi-Ghaziabad railway line level crossing at Railway Road, Vivek Vihar. Since between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., this crossing used to close 33 times with average closing time of around nine minutes, it meant that the nearly five hour closure adversely affected movement of about 2,000 vehicles daily. As such the RUB would ensure free flow of traffic between Vivek Vihar and Dilshad Garden.

DDA has also cleared construction of missing link of Master Plan Road No.65 connecting G.T. Road and Road No. 66 in trans-Yamuna. Construction of this missing link shall provide a direct approach from Road No. 57 to Road No. 66 and save commuters a distance of about 1.5 kms. The link will also bypass a red light at G.T. Shahadara Road and ease the traffic flow between Viswas Nagar, Bholanath Nagar, Azadnagar, Karkardooma and Zafrabad.
