Photo: PTI CHANDIGARH: A blistering heat wave on Saturday swept most places across North India, with Hisar sizzling at 46.6 C and many other places recording their hottest day of the season so far. The residents of Hisar, where the mercury had soared to 46.8 degree Celsius on Friday, got no respite as the maximum temperature settled six degrees above the normal range, the Meteorological Department said here. Chandigarh (42 C), Ambala (42.1 C) and Karnal (42.8 C) all recorded their hottest day so far and the maximum temperature settled four degrees above the normal range. Oppressive heat conditions also swept Punjab, with Amritsar turning out to be the hottest at 44.6 degrees C, seven above normal. Ludhiana at 44 C and Patiala at 43.5 C also got no respite from severe heat wave conditions as both the places recorded four degrees above the normal. Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala also registered their hottest day of the season. Power cuts in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh also made the heat unbearable for the people. The mercury in the hills soared and Shimla recorded a high of 28.5 C, seven degrees above normal. Bhuntar (36 C) and Sundernagar (38.2 C) were among the hotter places in Himachal. Srinagar recorded a high of 30.4 C, up seven degrees. Intense heat conditions swept Jammu, which recorded a high of 43.6 C, six degrees above normal.
Two more die in U.P.
Two more persons have died due to severe heat wave conditions in Uttar Pradesh with the death count standing at seven on Saturday as temperatures stayed above 40 degrees Celsius at many places in the State. Jhansi was the hottest place at 45 C while temperatures at several places hovered around 40 C even as humidity levels also rose, the weather office here said. One person died of heatstroke in Mahoba while a pilgrim hailing from Ghazipur, Ramashankar Pandey, died in Varanasi overnight, police said. There was expected to be no let-up in the heat wave conditions in the state over the next 24 hours, the Met Office said.
Ganganagar records 48 degrees
Rajasthan is reeling under an intense heat wave with temperature touching 48 degree centigrade in Ganganagar on Saturday. Five people from different areas in the state are reported to have died over the past two days, succumbing to the rising heat. The strong dust-laden winds blowing the entire day are forcing people to stay indoors. The temperatures are hovering between 44 degrees centigrade to 48 degrees in different districts in the state.
