Opposition lacks cohesion: Congress

S. Nadarajan

PONDICHERRY: All-India Congress Committee general secretary B. K. Hariprasad said on Saturday that the Opposition had nothing concrete to offer to the people, who were convinced of the need for the Congress rule to continue in the Union Territory.

Addressing presspersons, Mr. Hariprasad said that during his campaign, he could see that people favoured the Congress and its allies.

(The first phase of polling was over in the Mahe and Yanam regions, and the Pondicherry and Karaikal regions will go to the polls on Monday).

Mr. Hariprasad said the welfare measures implemented by the Congress Government had benefited the people a lot.

Asked who would be the Chief Minister in the event of the Congress-led coalition forming a government, he said the candidate would be from the Congress. Mr. Rangasamy had done a good job, he said, but added that the Chief Minister would be decided by the Congress Legislature Party and the AICC.

PCC leader Shanmugham and AICC general secretary V. Narayanasamy, secretary P. Sudhakar Reddy and CWC special invitee V. Vaithilingam, who is seeking re-election from Nettapakkam, hoped that the people would give the Congress and its allies a fresh mandate to form the next government. The Opposition was weak and lacked cohesion.
