KOZHIKODE: New varieties of spices developed by research institutes of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) will be the focus of discussions at the national biennial group meeting of spices research workers and the workshop of All India Coordinated Research Project on Spices (AICRPS) to be held for three days from May 25 at the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) in Kozhikode. An IISR spokesman said some of these might be recommended for release for large-scale cultivation, if approved by experts. The programme is being organised by IISR and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India. About 100 scientists from State Agricultural Universities, Departments of Horticulture and Agriculture, Directorate of Spices Development, Spices Board, IISR - Kozhikode, National Research Centre on Seed Spices, Ajmer would participate. Farmers' representatives and officials from ICAR - New Delhi will be attending the national workshop, R. Dinesh, senior scientist and Public Information Officer at IISR, said. The inaugural on May 25 will be presided over by Dr.G. Kalloo, Deputy Director General (Horticulture), ICAR at the Silver Jubilee Hall at IISR. During the three-days deliberations, research results emanating from about 110 projects will be discussed. More than 200 presentations covering 12 crops from 19 coordinating centres will also be discussed and research results analysed. Sessions will be chaired by eminent scientists. It is expected that a few new varieties of spices will be recommended for release and technologies developed for transfer finalised in the respective sessions. The exchange of germplasm of spices within the country and the need to import it will also be discussed.
