Two drowned in

Achenkoil River

PATHANAMTHITTA: Two youth were drowned in the Achenkoil River while taking bath at Mangaram Edakkadavu, near Pandalam, on Sunday afternoon.

The Pandalam police identified the deceased as Riyaz (21) of Mangaram Thahir Manzil and Padmakumar (21) of Mangaram Karangayil. The body of Riyaz was fished out of the river by the local people. Search operations are continuing to retrieve the body of Padmakumar. — Staff Reporter

2 killed in

accident

Thrissur: Two persons were killed and two seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling collided with a tanker lorry at Potta, near here, on Sunday. The deceased were identified as Immatti Veluthukkaran Andrews and Muttichurkkaran Devitta. Andrews' wife Sherly and son Ronald have been admitted to the Medical Trust Hospital in Ernakulam. According to the police, the accident occurred at 5.45 p.m. Andrews and his family were travelling from Angamaly to Thrissur. — Staff Reporter

`Blast probe report

not received'

THRISSUR: District Collector K.S. Premachandra Kurup said here on Sunday evening that the he was yet to receive the report of the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Swaminathan into the blast at the Thrissur Pooram fireworks production unit at Padukkad on Thursday, claiming seven lives. It was reported earlier that the RDO would submit his report on Sunday. — Staff Reporter

Kathaprasangam artiste bags award

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kadackode Viswambharan, noted Kathaprasangam practitioner, has been chosen for the 2006 Joseph Kaimaparamban Award for lifetime contribution to the art form. The award carries a cash component of Rs.5,001, citation and a plaque. The award would be given away at a function here on May 27, the death anniversary of Joseph Kaimaparamban. The foundation has decided to bring out a directory of Kathaprasangam artistes. NIPM office-bearers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 23rd annual general body meeting of the National Institute of Personnel Management (NIPM), Thiruvananthapuram Chapter, has elected P. Sudeep chairman and G. L. Muraleedharan honorary secretary of the chapter for 2006-'07. The meeting also elected Joseph Varghese and S. Sasikumar vice-chairmen; Varkichen Pettah honorary additional secretary and T. Steel bombs recovered

KOZHIKODE: A police party led by Nadapuram Circle Inspector Prajeesh Thottathil recovered three steel bombs from a lane near Thaniyullaparambil in Nadapuram during a raid on Sunday. The police said the three bombs were found buried in the sand. The raid was conducted after the police recovered three steel bombs at Thaniyullaparambil on Saturday. Four country bombs had been seized from Kummakkottu, near Nadapuram, last week. — Staff Reporter

Award for scribes

Thiruvananthapuram: K. Padmajan (Mathrubhumi, Kochi) and Reji Joseph (Deepika, Kottayam) have been selected for the Nammude Arogyam award instituted by the Indian Medical Association for the year 2005- '06, IMA State president Joseph Mani and secretary R. Ramesh announced here on Sunday. The awards will be presented at the State conference of the IMA scheduled to be held in Palakkad on May 14. — Staff Reporter

Painting exhibition

Thrissur: An exhibition of paintings by K.N. Ayyappan will be held at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi art gallery from May 10 to 14. Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan will inaugurate the show. — Staff Reporter

Ration dealers' plea

KOZHIKODE: The All Kerala Retail Ration Dealers' Association has sent a fax message to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Adoor Prakash stating that the ration dealers were not disbursed this week's ration rice for supply to Below the Poverty Line (BPL) customers as the Government had not remitted the subsidy amount for the rice distributed for BPL customers for the month of May with the Food Corporation of India (FCI). In a statement, association State organising secretary T. Mohammedali and State working president M.V. Basheer said the dealers were not able to provide ration rice to BPL cardholders as a result. It urged the Government to remit the amount with the FCI. — Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: Serve India, which is celebrating its Silver Jubilee year, has invited applications from Non-Resident Keralites for its Serve India Pravasi Award 2006. The award carries a cash prize and a citation. The applicant should have worked abroad for at least 10 years and should be aged between 30 and 60 years. Training course

KOZHIKODE: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Rehabilitation Council of India will jointly organise a five-day awareness-cum-training project for parents and family members of mentally challenged and blind children. IGNOU has selected AWH here as the centre for organising such a programme in the State. — Staff Reporter

Action panel to

picket trains

KOZHIKODE: The action committee will picket trains on May 27 to press its demand that express trains halt at Payyoli. The agitation, led by the Payyoli Railway Development Committee, has been on for many years. The panel has put forward the demand as a large number of people from Payyoli need to commute by trains daily to reach their place of work in the neighbouring districts. Since express trains do not stop at the station, commuters have to travel to Koyilandy to board the train. A few express trains, passing through Payyoli, were delayed on account of recent picketing of trains by the committee..

MALAPPURAM: Calicut University has ordered an inquiry into the allegations levelled against a teacher at its Centre For Physical Education. A three-member committee, headed by Pro-Vice-Chancellor C. Gopinathan Pillai, will look into the allegations against Rajesh B. Padikkal.

Palliative care in State

KOZHIKODE: Volunteers working in the field of palliative care in the State, who gathered for their State convention at Poonoor here, have resolved to extend palliative care facilities to regions where their services are not available yet. The convention concluded at Poonoor on Sunday. Palliative care facilities to mitigate sufferings of patients in advanced stages of terminal illnesses are now available in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, but only on a limited scale in some places and not available at all in many other towns. Services of the Neighbourhood Networks in Palliative Care (NNPC), which provides community-based help to patients and their families, are available, but these are now restricted to a few places.
