MYSORE: Residents of Kyathamaranahalli area staged a protest at K.R. Circle and took out a procession on Monday urging the district administration to stop the construction of a building on the Kyathamaranahalli lake precincts.

`Illegal construction'

The protesters marched from Kyathamaranahalli through the main thoroughfares of the city before squatting at K.R. Circle to protest against the "illegal construction"

on Survey No. 132, which falls in the Kyathamaranahalli lake precincts.

They said the property measuring 7.35 guntas belonged to the Huliyamma temple, and that it was being used for various temple rituals. They said the lake waters were regularly used for rituals at the Huliyamma temple and the Mahadeshwara Swamy temple before the lake dried up in the 70s.

They pointed out that sewage was allowed to flow into the lake during 1978-79.

But now, several individuals and institutions had started claiming that the dried up tank area belonged to them.

Demanding that the construction of a building be stopped, the residents said the same piece of land could be utilised to building a school, a college or a community hall that could benefit over 15,000 people residing in the area.

The protesters marched to the Deputy Commissioner's office where they handed over a memorandum urging the authorities to prevent any new construction on the lake precincts.
