Fares of some trains

to be increased

NEW DELHI: Fares of some Rajdhani and Shatabdi express trains will be increased from Tuesday. Northern Railway has taken the decision in view of levy of service tax on catering services in trains.

Passengers who have purchased tickets in advance will be required to pay the difference of fare to the ticket checking staff on the train for which a receipt will be issued.

Gang-rape of a minor girl condemned

NEW DELHI: The All-India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) has condemned the gang-rape of a minor girl here this past week and expressed outrage at the callousness shown by the personnel at Sabzi Mandi police station.

It alleged that the victim and her mother were witness to a bribe being offered to the police to hush up the case. Also, it accused the police of trying to suppress the case by offering money to the victim as compensation. It demanded an enquiry into the tardiness displayed by the police and disciplinary action against the personnel involved.

"Sadbhawna Diwas'' celebrated

NEW DELHI: The chief of Satguru Darshan Dham, Charwinda Das Teer Tarakkariji, celebrated his 50th birthday as "Sadbhawna Diwas'' for world peace at Air Force Auditorium in Subroto Park here on Tuesday.

Children of the Dham put up a skit on the issue of female foeticide. The Dham adopted seven children whose education it would sponsor.

Free eye check-up camp

NEW DELHI: G. M. Modi Hospital opened a free eye check-up camp at its premises on Monday in view of a sharp increase in eye-related ailments this summer due to over-exposure to ultraviolet rays.

Ultraviolet rays of the sun can trigger a host of ophthalmic maladies including cataract, muscular degeneration, benign growth, solar retinopathy and eye cancer. Along with preventive diagnosis, patients at the camp - open till this weekend -- can avail of concessions on all surgeries and treatments of eye problems.

Ambulance donated

NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant-Governor B. L. Joshi received a Maruti ambulance on behalf of Delhi Red Cross (DRC) at Raj Nivas on Monday, World Red Cross Day. The ambulance has been donated by A. K. Chadha, trustee of Sneh Jyoti Anita Chadha Memorial Trust, in memory of his wife.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Joshi asked DRC to reach out to citizens as many are willing to donate for a good cause.

Medico gets 5-year-RI

NEW DELHI: Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) judge Binod Goyal on Monday sentenced Prem Pal Singh, Chief Medical Officer of Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital, to 5-year-rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs 12,000.
