NEW DELHI: Taking note of heat wave conditions in the Capital, the Delhi Government on Monday directed all government-run, government-aided and public schools in the city to advance their summer vacation and close down from this Wednesday. Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said he had asked the Education Department to issue an immediate advisory to the schools to close down by May 10. He said although a number of government and aided junior schools had closed down already on May 6, senior schools were to close down for the summer vacation on May 13. Now it has been decided to advance the vacation in all such schools since the heat wave had got very intense and there was a general apprehension that it could have an adverse impact on children if they were to venture out for school. Mr. Lovely said all public schools had also been asked to close down by May 10 in view of the rising temperatures that had touched almost 44 degrees Celsius. The Minister said the schools had been advised that if the advanced vacation upsets their schedule they could hold extra classes during June when the mercury is expected to come down with the arrival of the monsoon in the latter part of the month. Mr. Lovely said he had been receiving representations from parents of school children requesting an early summer break in view of the heat wave conditions. He said the Government took the decision after holding consultations at various levels. The official requirement for any school is to have at least 210 teaching days in a year and this could be met by holding extra classes.
