IMPHAL: Four youths, whom the police described as insurgents, were gunned down in two encounters in Manipur on Monday night. Sophisticated weapons were recovered from their person.

Police commandos and personnel of 24 Assam Rifles intercepted four youths, who were riding two motorbikes, at Sora in Thoubal district at 9 p.m. When challenged, they reportedly opened fire at the personnel. In retaliatory fire, two youths were killed. The other two escaped.

The deceased are believed to be ranking leaders of the People's United Liberation Front, a Muslim outfit. The police said two M-16 pistols and one AK 56 rifle with ammunition were recovered.

In Churachandpur district, personnel of 3 Assam Rifles intercepted a van at 11.30 p.m. The driver refused to stop, and two occupants opened fire at the personnel, who retaliated.

In another incident, an unidentified youth, blindfolded and his hands tied, was brought to Iroishemba near here and killed.
