CHENNAI : A spiritual seeker must consciously cultivate good qualities that are conducive for his progress. This is essential to insulate oneself from undesirable influences and also to prepare the mind for contemplation on the Self (Atman). As it is not possible for all to meditate on the Absolute especially in the initial stages of spiritual life, the Bhagavad Gita prescribes worship of a form of God according to one's preference. The mind then develops concentration on the Supreme Being naturally. This in course of time will enable the aspirant to meditate on the formless Absolute. In his discourse, Sri Goda Venketeswara Sastri said a devotee who had good qualities was dear to God. Lord Krishna has said in the Gita, "He who is free from malice towards all beings, friendly and compassionate, rid of `I' and `mine', balanced in joy and in sorrow, forgiving by nature, ever-contented and mentally united with Me, nay, who has subdued his mind, senses and body, has a firm resolve, and has surrendered his mind and reason to Me that devotee of Mine is dear to Me." Even Patanjali's Yogasutra lists the qualities of friendliness, compassion and cheerfulness as essential qualities of a Yoga practitioner. Affability and compassion towards all gives peace of mind and endears one to all, and their importance can be appreciated from the fact that these are resolutions taken by a monk at the time of renouncing the world. A spiritual person must be at peace with himself so that all beings can approach him. An example that readily comes to mind is Lord Rama who Valmiki describes as the embodiment of all desirable virtues that a human being should strive to possess. His amicable nature endeared Him to one and all, and He felt grateful for even a small help rendered. Contentment with one's lot in life is another quality to acquire because human nature is such that it seeks more and more without feeling satisfied at any stage in life. As there is no limit to human greed it is very important especially for one who is spiritually inclined to distinguish between what is necessary for fulfilling one's basic needs so that he will not be lured by materialistic pursuits for indulging himself. Developing this attitude helps not only to evolve spiritually but also to lead a peaceful life in the world.
